We strive to be a dynamic network that combines the resources of its members in mutual support, so as to benefit our communities on a local, national, regional, and global scale. Our mission is to facilitate international academic and research cooperation in order to enhance the scientific, cultural, social, and economic development of the region.
The University of Pavia (UNIPV) is one of the world’s oldest academic institutions: it was founded in 1361 and until the 20th century it was the only university in the Milan Area and the region of Lombardy. Today it is a comprehensive university, which covers all subject areas – Science and Technology, Engineering, Life Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences – and is composed of 18 Departments offering study programmes at all levels, from Bachelor’s degrees to Doctorate programmes. The academic staff counts more than 900 professors and researchers. 24,000 students, from both Italy and overseas, study at the University of Pavia. The University of Pavia participates in more than 400 international agreements with universities all over the world.
With over 700 years of history, more than 120,000 total students, 3,500 professors, 2,100 officials, technicians and librarians in addition to 1,350 employees in its university hospitals, Sapienza University of Rome (UNIROMA1) is the largest University in Europe. Its mission is to contribute to the development of the knowledge society through research, excellence, quality education, and international cooperation. The most influential university rankings worldwide place Sapienza among the first Italian Universities for its research, educational quality, and international dimension. Sapienza currently offers 300-degree programmes (Bachelor’s and Master’s) – among which over 60 are taught in English – 200 Advanced Professional Courses, over 90 PhDs and 80 specialization schools. Thanks to a wide network of agreements with universities around the world, Sapienza also provides its students many international opportunities, including double degrees, scholarships abroad, internships in European and non-EU countries, and international PhDs.
Istanbul Aydin University (IAU) is a non-profit, state-recognized endowment university established as a university in 2007. IAU has 12 Faculties, Schools of Applied Sciences, 3 Vocational Schools of Higher Education, a Graduate School and 30+ Applied Research Centres. IAU is committed to all dimensions of higher education, teaching, applied research and service to society. IAU has 40.000 students of which 6.000 are international. Internationalization is a priority for IAU. Some academic programs are taught in English. The university has made a lot of progress in quality assurance at both institutional and academic program levels and in global rankings in recent years.
Misurata University (MU) is a public Higher Education Institution in Libya and considered as one of the largest universities in the country. It was established in 1983 and has about 3,700 staff members; 1,210 of whom are faculty members and 655 teacher assistants beside around 1,820 administrative staff. With 17 faculties, the university offers more than 60 undergraduate programs with around 16,550 students and 20 postgraduate programs with about 900 students. Misurata University has gained a reputable and prestigious position amongst its peers in the country throughout its contribution in a number of EU promoted educational programs and capacity building projects that serve to offer opportunities for scientific research, mobility scholarships and multiple trainings for teaching staff development.
University of Tripoli (UoT) is a public institution located in Tripoli, the capital city of Libya. It is the largest institution of higher education in the country, that was founded and established in 1955 as a branch under the University of Libya. In 1973, it became independent and was named the University of Tripoli. UoT includes 20 faculties with 160 departments; in addition to 82 specialized sections. Students at the UoT graduate with undergraduate and postgraduate (including PhDs in 12 majors) degrees. The University also has Research Centres, Language Centre, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre, & Sustainable Development Centre. The University of Tripoli is a pioneering institution in Libya that works with different other Ministries, local municipalities, and other institutions. It has been closely cooperating with the civil society and international organizations
University of Benghazi (UoB) is a public university based in Benghazi, the second largest city in Libya. The comprehensive university offers PhD, Master, and undergraduate programs in different specialties. It includes 31 faculties, more than 230 departments, and six several research centres all committed to undertake research to educate, innovate and transform in order to solve community problems and improve the quality of life in society. Approximately 85,000 undergraduate students and 3000 graduate students are currently enrolled; UoB has about 3500 teaching staff and 7500 admin staff. UoB provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students and community including libraries, accommodation, sport facilities and activities. Furthermore, UoB offers financial aid, internal scholarships, and scholarships for its staff to study abroad, and exchange programs.
The University of Zawia (ZU), established in 1988, is a governmental scientific institution specialized in Higher Education and scientific research. It aims to operate according to the highest national and international standards in research and teaching, and prepare qualified under/post-graduates to respond to the needs of the society. The ZU has 27 faculties and provides Bachelor programs in Sports, Engineering, Arts, Science, Economics and Political Science, Education, Medical Technology, Dental, Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursery, Law and Natural Resources and Information Technology. As result of its strategy of Internationalisation the University is involved in many projects under the umbrella of Erasmus+. More than 50 agreements have been signed between ZU and other national and international institutions and organisations.
Omar Al-Mukhtar University (OMU) is a public institution located in Bayda. It is the third-largest university in Libya after the University of Tripoli and the University of Benghazi. It started its academic processions with the Faculty of Agriculture in 1975. OMU officially offers courses and programs leading to recognize higher education degrees in several fields of study. The university currently employs about 1800 full-time Libyan teaching staff, including foreign staff from Arabic and non-Arabic countries. Students were distributed into 172 departments out of 31 faculties. In addition, there are more than 1000 postgraduate students who registered at different fields of studies.
Sebha University is the largest university in the south of Libya, located in Sebha city. The university originated from the Faculty of Education – Sebha Branch, which was established in 1976 and was affiliated with the University of Tripoli. In the beginning of 1983, Sebha University was declared an independent university to serve the municipalities of southern Libya.Initially, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Sciences were established, followed by the faculties of Human Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering and Technology, Economics and Accounting. The number of university faculties has grown to 21. Additionally, there are seven different research centers within the university. Currently, the university has more than 25,000 male and female students. The university regularly organizes scientific, sports, and exhibition activities, scientific conferences, awareness seminars, training courses, and evaluates scientific research in local and international scientific journals. It also participates in various activities organized by other universities inside and outside Libya.
Sirte University (SU) was founded as a branch of the University of Benghazi in the year 1989. In 1992, it became an autonomous institution named as Sirte University in 2010. Since it gained its autonomous status, the university has been continuously expanding and has become one of well recognized HEIs in Libya. The university has at present 10 different schools with more than 10000 students, 600 full time teaching staff members including foreign staff from Arab and non-Arab countries. The university is also trying to enhance self-learning and research culture among its students, and has also established a Languages Centre in a hope of improving the standards of English Language among its students and to provide English courses for students who have awarded scholarships to do their masters and PhD degrees abroad.
Tobruk University (TU) is an officially recognized public higher education institution based in Tobruk in East Libya. The university consists of 15 faculties in 6 main campuses, with more than 8000 students. It has set a strategic plan to ensure delivering high quality education and to increase its research activities. The University is also actively involved in supporting the local society through providing support to the local authorities and organizations. Vision: Innovation and leadership in higher education, research and community support; both locally and internationally. Mission: Contributing positively to the development of the country through delivering high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and enhancing research capabilities, in addition to actively collaborating with local and international organizations in order to support the development of the country and strengthen knowledge share and production.
Gulf of Sidra University (GSU) is a newly established university, founded in 2017. The University is expected to have a great role in the region of Sidra Gulf which is considered the land of Libyan oil. The region urgently needs such institution to achieve scientific and cultural growth for society. GSU consists of 7 academic faculties which include Humanities, Applied and Medical Sciences. Gulf Of Sidra University has now with more than 2000 students. The university currently employs about 90 full-time teaching staff, and 5 are contractual foreign teaching staff from Arab and non-Arab countries. The university also employs 350 non-academic staff in different departments and offices across the university.
University of Gharyan (UoG) has opened its doors to students in 1991. UoG Vision: To become a prestigious academic institution competing with other local and international high education ones, it also works to be unique in the scientific and human fields ensuring the preparation of a new creative generation who will participate in building new Libya. UoG consists of 18 faculties in different scientific areas. All the faculties and centres follow all the quality of assurance rules that are issued by the QA office. The total number of students is 8800 approximately; the academic staff member’s number is around 950. UoG aims to build an international relationship and cooperation network with other universities and organizations from other countries.
Sabratha University is one of the public universities in Libya, with its administrative headquarters located in the city of Sabratha. It originally consisted of a group of colleges, some of which date back to 1992. These colleges were initially affiliated with Al-Zawiya University until 2015 when SABU was established as a independent university. Currently, the university comprises 23 colleges, welcoming about 14.000 students. The university strives to focus on human resources, elevating students’ scientific, intellectual, and moral standards to contribute to raising a new generation characterized by knowledge and ethics. It also aims to achieve educational and professional quality to build scientifically qualified cadres, aware of contemporary changes, and suitable for the labour market. Vision: A leading and distinguished university with high-quality education that has a positive impact on the knowledge society.
Nalut University (NU) was established in 2017. It has 8 faculties. The university works hard towards having a leading role in the scientific and academic research to fulfil the society job market needs and developmental approach to public services in the surrounding community. The university mission is to provide scientific programs that complies to international quality assurance specifications and standards, aiming to prepare qualified graduates in various disciplines, able to compete in the local and international labour markets, in addition to scientific activity and keeping pace with development in the field of knowledge industry. Nalut University has 300 teaching staff, 290 employees and 1590 students.
Established in 1988, Libyan Academy for Postgraduate Studies (LAPS) is a non-profit public higher-education institution located in the metropolis of Tripoli. Libyan Academy for Postgraduate Studies offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as Master degrees, Doctorate degrees in several areas of study. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrolment. Libyan Academy for Postgraduate Studies also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sports facilities and/or activities, as well as administrative services.
Established in 2006, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Libya is the government Ministry responsible for overseeing and regulating Higher Education, research and innovation in Libya. Its mission is to develop and promote high-quality tertiary education and research, foster innovation and entrepreneurship and enhance the skills and capabilities of the Libyan workforce. The Ministry is responsible for formulating policies, strategies and plans for Higher Education, research and innovation in Libya. It also regulates and monitors the quality of HEIs and programs in the country, ensures that they are aligned with the needs of the labour market and promotes internationalization and collaboration with institutions abroad. In addition, the Ministry provides financial support and scholarships to Libyan students to study abroad, promotes scientific research and development and supports the transfer of knowledge from academia to industry.
